Well it is closer than it was to spring. Only 10days until official spring. Hasn't been a bad winter but is starting to seem like it's a long one. Most everyone has their maple tree tapped and some have boiled a couple of times. Tic Merrill says that the maple syrup is the first crop of the season from the farm. A lot of farms are tapping now. When I was a young fellow seems there were very few farms that boiled syrup. We are on foal watch here at the farm. The mare is not due until the first of May. We still have a while for us on foal watch. We have a lot of farming planned for the spring so hope it will be an early year.
Tic Merrill (my grandfather) and I are starting to move out of the Pamachenee area as it is beginning to thaw. The roads will get so soft we won't be able to get over them. Linchpin Jones one of the ox teamster that has been working in the area had a hard time with his off ox. Tic said he was acting like a young bull at first green up. Probably would have to cut a gray birch withe and larrup him before he will straighten out.
